Memories of Old Stuarts Draft High School
(Information from Stuarts Draft Hub September 20, 1983)

This information came from Mr. Guy Stump former principal of Stuarts Draft Elementary School and the namesake of the current Stump Elementary School.

The first Stuarts Draft High School students started their high scool days in a two-story eight classroom building the county build in 1916. The building was torn down in 1953 and had housed both the elementary and high school.
Mr. Stump recalled that the freshmen and sophomores met in one classroom and the Juniors and Seniors in another. The teachers moved from classroom to classroom. During the hour's recess many of the 36 high school students played ball or they would take their sandwiches down to the stables and watch the horses. In those days many of the students rode horses to shcool. The first school bus was a wagon drawn by two horses. For 25 cents a student could park a horse at the school stables for a month. High School rings were $10.00
As the community grew the county added another building for the high school and in 1947  when the county high  schools were consolidated  this became the elementary school. Now this building belongs to the Stuarts Dratt Volunteer Fire Company and is home to the Rejoicing Life Church.
Mr. Stump joined the faculty at the school for $70.00 a month.
